Sunday School 11/20/2 Food For Thought: We looked at Revelation 22:1-7 which speaks of “the river of life-giving water”, which feeds the tree of life in the New Jerusalem. We started by talking about the importance of water (and rivers). We noted that it replenishes us, our bodies are mostly water, and we can't live without it (nor can most plant life). Therefore, water is the source of life. God's love should flow like a free, heavenly river free from all obstacles. Flowing with life and grace. However, a lot of times we build up dams. We defined a dam as something that keeps water from flowing freely. We said that the only one happy when dams are built up is the devil. God wants us to tear down and break down barriers - to build bridges. Jesus connected with the rich and the outcasts, those in church and those considered “scandalous” because he saw everyone through God's eyes. We also discussed how some of the rhetoric in our country (prejudice against others’ appearance, accent, or color) is an effort of dam-building apparently from the enemy. We then continued by looking at the examples in scripture describing the Holy Spirit as water. You can see the references from John 4:10-15. Also, 1 Cor 12:13 says For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit. We then looked at the Baptism ritual in the hymnal and reflected on the fact that new members of the body of Christ are brought in through WATER symbolism. We all said we would try to be Christians who BREAK DOWN the dams and help the love of God flow like a river in our world. Even though in this world, it feels like God may be absent, the truth is he is always with us. In the New Jerusalem, his presence will be ever present and his river, and there will be no trials or troubles to take our minds off of it.
